According to the co-owners Jerry and Sherrill Burke, the area is like the Smokies, without
the shops. It is a place to come for peace and quiet. This is a romantic getaway for adults, so no children
under 14, Sherrill said. We get a lot of locals from Lyerly, Trion and Menlo.
The closest person was from across the street and the furthest was Micronesia.
One couple has visited the cabins twice and
both times told the owners they were getting divorced at the beginning, but by the end of
their stay were getting along better, they said.
We have really good clientele, repeat
types some come two to three times per year, Jerry said. A lot of
people from this area say now that they do not have to go to the Smokies for peace and
quiet.
The office phone may be used for
emergencies, Jerry said. We will go get you too if you need help. So far there
have only been two people to get sick and need assistance.
We offer a masseuse that comes to the
cabin with a table, music and candles in the privacy of the cabin, Jerry said.
I love massages and once people get to know it they will enjoy it too.
The resort supplies guests with a map of
the area showing grocery store locations, tourist sites and more.
There is a nearby waterfall to view for the
adventuresome guests.
More than half of the clients check
in and we do not see them at all. But we like the interaction, Sherrill said.
Some people golf nearby.
Sight-seeing opportunities are: Pigeon
Mountain; Cloudland Canyon; antiquing in Summerville or in Mentone, Ala., at the White
Elephant or the Hitching Post. Nearby restaurants include Lookout Restaurant (9 miles),
Canyon Grill (20 miles), and Craigs Mere Manna in Alabama (20 miles).
In August a 450-mile yard sale will be
going on near the cabins. On the weekend of Oct. 2 the New Salem Arts and Crafts Festival
goes on nearby. Many potters, weavers, furniture makers, gourd decorators, and painters
who participate each year live in Cloudland.
This is absolutely the place to get
away, the Burkes said. We are half an hour from LaFayette, and one hour and 30
minutes from Gadsden or Huntsville, Ala.
